According to the types of endogenous hormones, plant hormones are divided into five categories: auxin (IAA), gibberellin (GA), cytokinin (CTK), abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene (ETH). In the latest academic research, brassinosterol (BR) is referred to as 6 endogenous plant hormones.

Among them, auxin (IAA), gibberellin (GA), cytokinin (CTK) and brassinosterol (BR) can promote the growth of plants. Abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene (ETH), two plant hormones, inhibit plant growth.

Various plant hormones have different roles in agricultural production. Some are similar, some are contrary, some promote each other, and some antagonize each other.
